Try to use elemental weapons. Fire for humans and animals. Shock for shielded targets, Corrosive for robots and armored targets. Explosive works fairly well on everything. You can ignore Slag while you're in Normal mode. Maya is also good with Sniper weapons. Try to find a good Jacobs sniper. Maliwans are good too.

Zer0 is more flexible skill-wise than Maya is, however I feel Maya's action skill is slightly more superior than Zer0's action skill. I have a 61 of both. I found Maya probably easier to play, but Zero has some really interesting builds. If you plan on playing online much, a support Maya would defin itely be my choice.
