This is has been resolved. I contacted Ecobee support and we moved the R wire back to RC, then went into setup and reconfigured. Even though the original setup was that there was only an RC, the Ecobee3 was showing both RC and RH as being connected. Removed the RH - and the system now does both cooling and heating with no additional wiring. Power-cycle your ecobee thermostat by removing it from the wall and leaving it off for about two minutes.
