Fully built 2.3 from speedperformance, 5858, mountune stage 1 transmission.I want to upgrade to a crate motor with just over 400 hp and 400 ft-lbs of torque, 700R4 trans, and VBP suspension but I want to make sure the stock rearend can handle that power. I have read on this forum, 600 hp with street tires, 400 with slicks. If the rearend is in good shape. He has the weaker 80-82 rear end.

First of all you are looking 5,000-10,000 on a motor. The turbos are not cheap nor the motor. To get 400-500 horses out of a 318 is not that difficult. You need good heads, cam and intake.

A two-bolt main, cast crank bottom end, properly machined and assembled would be good for at least 550-600 hp. 6-6300 rpm limit. 4 bolt mains and a steel crank can handle 700hp and 7200 rpm. Authentication and pre-purchase inspection service still available. PM me for more information. :thumbsup:

Though a stock 700R4 is rated to handle 350 HP, the users tend to have trouble when they go over 300 HP.Honda J series are known to handle really solid power numbers. Drag guys seem to make ~700hp with minimal modding (outside of massive turbos and injectors), but I'd imagine your streetable numbers would be closer to 400. The block and crank can take upwards of 900rwhp. The pistons and especially the ring-lands are the weakest link.
