How to take apart a kimber 1911.
Welcome to a 1911 with a bull barrel. The requirement of the tool to take down the pistol comes from the type of barrel used. Kimber uses a quality bushingless bull barrel in their 4" and 3" pistols to achieve the accuracy they wanted from those pistols. The standard 5" pistols have a normal bushing setup that does not require a tool for takedown.
Disassembly and reassebly is fairly easy, just keep a pen and a small allen wrench, paperclip or toothpick handy. Push down on the follower with your pen, stick the paperclip through witness holes to secure the compressed spring and wiggle the follower out. It should be slightly chamfered and polished to allow smooth transition across the angled face of the disconnector. Riding down the slide can make the condition worse.
The break in period for Kimbers is more intense than other more common 45's. However, when compared to higher dollar custom pieces, the break in is relatively short. It's all in the built in tolerances. Every gun is machined, to some degree. If the tolerances are close, as with the Kimber, the break in will be longer.The Aegis series of guns can be had in 9mm or 45 calibers and with barrels ranging from 3" to 5".
