The early model 39 came out right after WWI in the early 1920's. It had no prefix, and I can't give you a serial numbber range, but most are seen with 3 digit serial number if they are first year. The 39a is very similar in it's first year, as both had casehardened receivers, but the 39a had a round barrel, vs. the octagon barrel of the 39.

Only factory records or letters will truly tell when a particular gun was shipped. But these ranges are mostly pretty close.Without a manufacturing date, all I can do is guess. I did find one online Marlin search site and it indicated that all Marlin 39's with an S prefix were made in 1958 - 59. Boxhead mac. Marlin uses a weird system in which the first two digits of the serial number (in your case 02) are subtracted from 100 to give the year of manufacture.
