General. I purchased an astatic d104 with a dead ceramic element with the plan of upgrading it to an electret mic for my modern ham radio. I've used an authentic high impedance d104 previously with my old tube radio and I love the aesthetic of it. So I wanted to setup something similar form and function with my new radio, but with modern innards.

The D104 netted me overall better report than my Heil mic! My s-meter showed at least the full 100 watts when modulated, which never happened with the Heil. The Heil had one advantage, the frequency response was much wider and gave "studio" sound.

That one looks very similar to the old Johnson crystal elements. I had some old hand mics, and tried them in my D104. Unfortunately, the units I had were dead. Boo! I have been told they sound great, though. The kit looks nice. I have a Heil HC-5 around here somewhere that I used in a dead head D104, and it worked really well.
