If you are using a shield wall strategy, you’d be wise to take a lot of these guys along with you. There is no more defensively useful unit in the game.

Vlandia is the best for roughly that army composition. Use roughly 75% t3+ Vlandian Crossbowmen and 25% Vlandian Cavalry. If you want to stay one faction I would recommend empire.
