If you value him so much then don't be ungrateful for what he does get you. Why is the birthday gift from him such a big deal? I don't think it's lazy at all to get someone something they've mentioned they wanted. NTA a gift is a gift. He can't magically decide you should pay for something he gave you as a gift now that you have money. It's crazy he even mentioned that. Unless there's something you're not telling us, NTA. If he shows up with my mom somewhere, it’s fine. If not, that’s also fine. He’s a nice guy and I have nothing against him, I’m glad my mom is happy, but he’s nothing to me. He’s not my dad or step dad. You can change or forgo a birthday gift for any reason, or none at all, but that sounds like a good reason (number 2). Still it'll probably hurt her feelings and may cause a further rift, so you may want to consider just something different (like a small gift card) just to not be obvious.
