Lim gasket 3800.
The LIM Gasket failure on the 3800 II should be common knowledge to most mechanics, unless they are just shade tree mechanics, that is in my opinion. Have the lower intake manifold gasket changed to FEL-PRO Part # MS98014T, and have the EGR stove pipe swapped to the reduced diameter one that comes in that kit.
Diagnostic Tech. regarding 3.8l, blue locktite. Must use wire wheel to clean threads, not torque to yeild if not torqued too strong. If not sure, use new bolts. A must in this procedure, use grey silicone called "the right stuff" sets in a new york second. Have a old thread where you see where I put it.Changed the LIM gaskets with the new style, bought a new UIM from WBS, great price. I bought the "mod kit that puts a steel bushing in the EGR part of the UIM, and put a smaller diameter pipe in the LIM to give it that air gap between the pipe and the hole where the egr pipe passes thru the UIM.#1 LIM gasket - felpro or GM cavGTP. The UIM(upper intake manifold) gasket is the one between the LIM and UIM. The 2.8/3.1 V6 engines are notorious for LIM gasket failure. In a nut shell most GM V-engines have LIM gasket issues. GM just went a little cheap on the gasket design. The UIM gasket is not the issue so much on the 3800 seriesII as it is the UIM plenum itself that fails.A simple check for air entering the coolant system, open the radiator cap, start the motor, watch the coolant flow past, it should be a staedy flow with no air bubbles present. 01-31-2012. Any minor radiator or heater core clogging in the 3800 can become fully clogged up with the tabs and almost imposible to clear. These 3800 non supercharged and ford 4.6/5.4 injectors get pretty dirty by 70k,typical Bosch design.The Delphi SC injectors flow so much they very rarely clog and mostly only need an in tank cleaner if anything.
Strange squealing. i have a 1998 buick regal LS with the 3800 naturally aspirated. What happens is once the engine gets warmed up, i get a squeal coming from the engine. The squeal sound like a belt slipping or a bearing going out. I have replaced the belt, the belt tensioner, the alternator, and the water pump.
